Week 3- Webinars

I watched the following SirsiDynix archived webinar:
Teen Second Life: Library Services in a 3D world
Hosted by: Kelly Czarnecki
Date: May 22, 2007

This webinar addressed the question: What is "second life"? Kelly talked about the different types of popular online virtual realities and communities of social software of the time such as Gaia, Runescape, Teen Second Life, and The Sims.
She addressed the different attraction features such as the ability to create your own avatar, the ability to IM, to use gestures....etc. Some of the positives she discussed addressed was that this kind of software application allowed a very open space for teens to explore even though the structure may look or feel game-like. Another attraction is that the avatars may be linked to Myspace or other teen-frequented sites. Second Life gives teens an outlet to create& share and helps build developmental needs through hands on activity.

Watch Here for an example video made by the host on YouTube.

This webinar was very informative because I was unaware of the term "Second Life" given to these virtual reality software. I know that these programs are still very popular with teens in the library and have expanded even further since this '07 webinar. These online meetings tools are not only a great way to connect and learn about current library issues, but also offer a great place to refer back to archived materials if you are wanting to learn more about a subject with which you may be unfamiliar. I believe that Webinars and Online Meeting sites will only continue to progress and expand in the next ten years!

Face to face on facebook!

Week 2!
Since I had an existing facebook already I took this time to review the introduction and social networking video as if I were a novice. I also checked out some of the alternative communities to see what they were all about. I had never even heard of Ning before, so I spent a bit of time looking it over. It was fun looking through my fellow 23-things peers' blogs and finding new friends and colleagues on facebook:) I can only hope that they find me as interesting! I left a comment on the wall of a friend but am still waiting to be accepted by another. I am excited to meet new friends on the world wide web.

My personal thoughts on social networking:
I cannot recall exactly how I discovered facebook but it was my Sophomore Year of College in '04 and I watched how far and how quickly it escalated. Soon after, I got a MySpace account. It was interesting to see how different the two sites were and the crowd to which they appealed. Originally, I felt my information was more secure on facebook since I knew that you had to be a college student to use it. Even now I feel comfortable using and controlling my privacy accounts and knowing my information is being viewed solely under my discretion. At its start I felt Myspace seemed to appeal more to the high school crowd. It seemed like an expanded version of an AIM profile or a chatroom....a space where people (primarily younger) would over share information in hopes to meet people or express their feelings. Eventually I had to shut my Myspace account down do to how uncomfortable I felt with what people were using the site for. I am glad, however, to see that good things have emerged from it, such as the discovery of musicians, artists and writers. Overall, I feel that if used correctly social networking sites can be an effective tool in communication.

Excuse me a moment whilst I introduce myself...

My name is Ericka Brunson, but my friends call me amazing. I am 24 years young and live in Manhattan, KS. I am the Outreach Services Coordinator and YP librarian at the Dorothy Bramlage Public Library. I love what I do and absolutely adore all the children I work with... and the ones in my storytimes, too ;) I graduated from K-State in 2007 with a BA in English. I am currently going back to school to acquire my Masters in Library Science from ESU. I cannot envision myself outside of the wonderful profession of librarianship. I wish I could say that I am new to this whole blogging thing, but I have years and years of experience embarrassing myself through online blogs. (See: horrible high school rantings about how life is so unfair...via Xanga or Live Journal) I think 23 things is a fantastic idea. I am participating because I want to encourage everyone to keep up with current trends and social networking and communication resources. I am excited for whatever challenges are thrown my way. But please don't judge me if you come back to my blog and find me crying.
